Acting together with stakeholders

The underlying idea of this project (and the previous one) is that stakeholders are an integral part for both the identification of the problem and the search for a solution (policy). During the first project we witnessed the salmon industry at two contrasting stages. We began in 2006 with a booming industry, and a sense of success and pride all around. Later on the crash of the industry due to the deadly ISA virus dominated the scene and changed the mood. Complain, blame and explanation were keywords those days. In between these two contrasting moods we managed to put the conservation message forward. The crisis brought about a sense that many things should be improved if the activity was to be resumed. The boom and bust of the salmon industry gave sense to our conservation message, at least partially. It showed that a multifactorial problem should be adressed from different angles, disciplines and point of views. Coping with complex problems requires a scientific baseline to monitoring ecosystem processes (ecosystem-based approach). Although being ahead of the main concern of the industry these days, we now propose the ex situ cultivation of two endangered species that are barely known to the public and science. And continue with the message that every component of the ecosystem counts when it comes to exploit it in a sustainable manner.
